Chinese child's indigo jacket
This Chinese boy's indigo jacket is made in eleven layers, each a different shade of blue. The outer layer is finished with the traditional egg white wash so that it is glossy. There is an embroidery detail on the left front opening of the jacket. The dealer I obtained this from said it is Miao, early 20th century, and that wealth in the rural villages of China was displayed by many layers of clothing or in a particular piece of clothing, so this child, with eleven layers in his jacket, was from a well-to-do family indeed!
